A colleague of mine, another teacher out on base, just put in an order for me with the CMP for a service grade M-1 Garand. Should run about $600.00, plus about $25 for shipping. Springfield Arsenal, but with lots of mix and match parts. Now I need to get some decent ammo.
I've always wanted one, and I had a blast shooting Mushy's rifle when I was there. Can't wait.

Brothers In Arms!
Congratulations...I think mine was $145 back in the day!
Hey..I don't know how to comment on this post, not knowing anything about guns and stuff...but I just had to let you know how touching the post about your mom and dad was.
I know where you're coming from..it hurts so much to see the people we love in that situation.
Sounds like you have a neat mom, a great dad..and they have a good son.
That doesn't happen everyday.
Ya know, pd's across the country are reporting an ammo shortage. Should you really be pleasure shooting? Moral of the story? If you need to shoot, make it count. Take out an annoying person.
Oh Hell yeah! FHBs getting a Garand! Hopefully CMP will have some left by the time I'm a citizen!
M1's rock.
Make sure you shoot military ammo in it. The Walmart stuff appears to have a different pressure curve to it, and can cause malfunctions; even break parts.
Just had this diagnosed on mine by a top notch gunsmith...
I love mine, there is some decent Korean surplus floating around the gunshows already in clips.
Look foor the off color ammo box with the korean lettering, I paid $90 for 640 rounds on bandoliers filled with loaded en-bloc clips.
